What We Know So Far
Set in the expansive world of Arknights, Endfield builds upon the lore and strategy mechanics of its predecessor while introducing fresh gameplay elements. You take on the role of the Endministrator, tasked with exploring the harsh terrains of Talos-II, uncovering its secrets, and fending off dangers using strategic prowess.
Key Features:
- Exploration and Combat: Navigate vast, interconnected zones, battle enemies, and uncover hidden treasures. Expect dynamic environmental mechanics like ziplines and power nodes to make exploration more engaging.
- Base-Building: Inspired by games like Factorio, Endfield’s Advanced Industrial Complex (AIC) allows players to gather resources, construct facilities, and create production lines to support their adventures.
- Cross-Platform Release: While the beta focuses on the PC version, Endfield is also in development for PS5 and mobile platforms, promising a diverse gaming experience.
My Experience with the Alpha Test
Having played the alpha version (v0.1.4) earlier this year, I’m excited to share some insights. As a long-time Arknights player I’ve almost completed the test build, missing only the Crisis Rifts, and here’s my take:
1. Gameplay Mechanics
The gameplay splits into exploration, combat, and base-building, each with its pros and cons:
- Exploration: Some areas are richly detailed and engaging, while others feel linear. The addition of puzzles and environmental mechanics shows promise, though improvements like collectible hints could enhance the experience.
- Combat: While it’s tactical, it lacks fluidity due to the absence of movement options like dodges or parries during cooldowns. The Elemental Orb mechanic also feels underdeveloped, making encounters slightly clunky.
- Base-Building: This aspect shines, offering deep, rewarding mechanics. However, the learning curve is steep, and some advanced tools need earlier availability in the tech tree.
2. Audiovisual Design
The character models are detailed, and the UI is clean and intuitive. However, enemy designs lack variety, and the soundtrack could benefit from more distinct themes for each region. Cutscenes are a mix of cinematic and in-game, with some stiffness in animations.
3. Storytelling
The narrative currently feels underwhelming. While the worldbuilding is strong, the lack of emotional stakes and character depth detracts from the immersion. The absence of a strong antagonist or text log also hampers the storytelling experience.
4. Performance
Even on my old Laptop setup, the game runs smoothly at 60FPS, with occasional stuttering. However, bugs like camera lock-ups and UI glitches occasionally disrupt the experience.
Looking Ahead
While the game has areas for improvement, the foundation is solid. With feedback from the upcoming beta, Hypergryph has a real chance to refine the combat, story, and visual polish. Whether you’re a seasoned Arknights player or new to the series, Endfield offers something fresh and intriguing.
